Guernsey v G's

Guernsey v G's

Matt Marriott9 Apr - 12:41

70 - 8

To round up their league season, this Saturday saw the women fly across the water to the exotic island of Guernsey to face league winning contenters, Guernsey Raiders. After a tough series of injuries and a couple of faces returning from uni, the lineup saw some new combinations on the field which posed both challenges and opportunities for the G's.

Similar to previous games in the season, the first half saw G's take awhile to switch on with the Raiders scoring several tries through strong line-breakings runs. A galiant defensive effort from Neil at fullback and captain Lewis (N) saw some excellent try-line saving efforts but the raiders kept breaking through. Despite the bombardment, the G's backline managed some fantastic game play with Ellwood, a recent addition from the U18's, doing some excellent runs down the wing to bring the G's within scoring distance more than once.

Another highlight was a beautifully timed interception from Lewis (N) which saw her weave and carry through almost half the pitch but only to be brought down 10m short of the try-line by some impressive defence from the Raiders. Despite these efforts the scoreline was 41-0 at halftime but with it being Teasdale's 40th birthday and a trip away, G's remained in good spirits going into the second half. And wow what a second half it turned out to be.

With scrums remaining strong and Guernsey's discipline waning, the Lewis duo played some smart rugby with their iconic tap and go’s which drove G's to the try line. Keen to get points on the board, Lewis (S) opted for the posts and got the first three points for the away side.

The minutes continued and G's held back the Raiders with some exciting play from the whole G's team. An excellent lineout from Forsyth saw the ball in the hands of Marshy who turned and powered towards the try line. More carries from the forward pack got the G's 5m out from the try line, and with an illegal turnover the penalty was set to the G's and Lewis (S) didn't hesitate to drive over and score a try to make it eight points for G's.

An excellent start to the second half saw G's winning for the best part despite energy levels dropping as the sun shone through. With injuries rising and the Raiders bringing their stronger players back on, the latter stage of the second half saw a few more tries for the home side.

In the good spirit of rugby, the ref obliged and the legendary Teasdale, who played very much under the influence, got sent to the iconic Guernsey sin bin to celebrate her 40th.

Regardless of the scoreline finishing 70-8, the G's played to the end and flew home in high spirits. Whilst this was the finale of the league season, the women will face rivals Seaford in the Sussex Cup final on the 10th of May at Uckfield RFC so please save the date and go and support them!
