This Sunday, Sutton & Epsom 2's welcomed East Grinstead Women to their home ground for the first match of the season between the two sides. The atmosphere was charged as East Grinstead arrived, although their lineup looked slightly different due to the absence of key players sidelined by injury. Nevertheless, they were determined to put up a strong fight against their opponents.

From the kickoff, it was evident that East Grinstead meant business as they started with a burst of energy. Lewis (N) led the charge with a thrilling run from a tap and go, although possession was unfortunately lost just meters away from the try line. Sutton & Epsom responded well, utilising their speed on the wings to mount pressure. However, resilient defense from Lewis (S) thwarted Sutton's initial attempts at scoring, with their first try attempt being held up.

Undeterred, Sutton & Epsom persisted and eventually found success with a try down the wing. But East Grinstead hit back swiftly, with Pellet, Byrne, and Carrick leading the charge and setting up Sullivan for a powerful try. Despite the missed conversion, East Grinstead had closed the gap to 7-5.

The following 10 minutes showcased intensity and skill from both teams in a very tight contest, with notable displays of strength in the scrums from East Grinstead. Despite Sutton's persistent attacks, G’s defense remained resolute, denying them a further try with another great effort to hold up the attackers.

As halftime approached, Sutton capitalised on a narrow defense from East Grinstead to extend their lead with another try. However, a determined effort from McCarthy and a offload to a speedy Neill down the wing saw East Grinstead narrow the deficit just before halftime, ending the half 12-10 in Sutton's favour.

After a brief halftime break with orange slices and Haribos, East Grinstead emerged revitalised for the second half. Strong performances in the lineouts and powerful runs from the Wallis sisters and the forward packs alike, allowed Jacobs to drive over the line, putting East Grinstead ahead for the first time in the match. 12-15.

However, Sutton reacted swiftly, reclaiming the lead with a powerful try down the middle. The remainder of the game saw both teams locked in a fierce battle, with neither able to break through for the breakthrough try despite their best efforts.

As fatigue began to set in, East Grinstead fought valiantly, but in the final minutes, Sutton capitalised on tired legs to score two late tries, both of which were converted, sealing the victory with a final score of 33-15.

Despite the tough loss, East Grinstead displayed immense determination and effort throughout the match. Huge congratulations to Imogen Neill on her women's debut and Player of the Match performance. With the next match at home this weekend, let’s get behind the women as they take on Worthing once again!
