48 - 5

On Sunday G’s Women headed north to face Beckenham 2's for their third league game of the season.

From the off Beckenham started strongly, with some excellent carries from a very strong forward pack. Against a slight G's team, Beckenham powered through to take the first try of the game 5 minutes in, which was easily converted.

Determined to fight back, the G's used their speed to chase down the restart from Lewis (S). Great defensive pressure from G's led to a penalty opportunity with Lewis (S) opting to kick for the 3 points but unfortunately this just drew wide. A 22m drop out led straight to a Gs attack with Ash sprinting down the line, unfortunately putting a foot in touch before she managed to get the pass away.

Beckenham proceeded to display some very well drilled line outs and powerful scrums which maintained them a strong possession. Combined with some more big carries, Beckham put another 5 points on the scoreboard. Eager for more, Beckenham restarted strongly once more, with some great runs down the wing but nevertheless G's displayed strong defense with some big tackles from Carrick and O'Donoghue which defied them a certain try.

A 22 drop out, with Shackel on the chase, put the G's in a great attacking position further down the field. A knock on from Beckenham led to a G's scrum which the G's capitalised on and put a game play, direct from training, into action. A quick ball from Lewis (N) at 9 to a crashing Greenslade saw the G's edge close to the line. With good support in tow and another great line from Wallis, the G's edged ever closer to the Beckenham try line. Excellent rucking from Muggeridge and Teasdale allowed Ash to take another quick ball to power over the line for G’s first try. The conversion was narrowly missed by Wallis.

Beckenham fought hard on the return and strong defensive efforts from G's led to Quirin and Greenslade both having to leave the field, drastically changing the G's back line. A short water break saw the arrival of Beckenhams water girl in what appeared to be a pink leopard spot dressing gown - interesting choice of attire. With players in different places and a Beckenham player making up the last number, the G's were on the back foot in their own 22.

Beckenham proceeded to score another try, closing the first half 17-5. Could the G's close the gap?

The second half proceeded to be dominated with very strong carries from the Beckenham side, increasing the gap on the scoreboard. Taking a different tactic, G's explored the backfield with chases from Wallis, Shackel and Forsyth gaining a lot of meters. Despite their efforts, G's struggled to get any further points on the board. Playing a player down for most of the second half, energy levels drained but nevertheless they still gave their all into defending against the relentless Beckenham attack. Despite the efforts, the game closed 48-5 after a series of good runs from Beckenham.

With many injuries incurred, the team had a tough day in the office. However, they will bounce back with hard, but essential lessons learned.
