G's v Guernsey

Matt Marriott24 Sep - 13:43

15 - 40

Finally the new season kicks off. And what a game to start it with. Guernsey joined us at home on a sunny, but chilly Sunday, ready for some action. With EG struggling for numbers, the visiting team were happy to lend us a player to make sure the full 15 aside took place, showing the true values of rugby.

Guernsey came out firing in the first half. With a bit of back and forth, and some strong efforts in defence, it wasn't enough to stop Guernsey put 4 converted tries on the scoreboard Within 20 minutes. Determined to put a stop to it, some fantastic tackles were made by Millie, Jorja, and a potentially try saving tackle made by the loaned player from Guernsey. The scrums were going from strength to strength as EG settled into the game, with Naomi winning a couple of penalties through her speed getting to the ruck. Despite the fight from G’s, Guernsey were able to strike two more times before the half time whistle went.

From the moment the whistle blew for the second half, it was clear the EG team wanted to show everyone what they were made of. Pure fire! The team had found their stride and were ready. The scrums were dominant with one resulting in a turnover as Ella swooped in for the steal. The pack edged it out for Naomi to make ground for EG. Whilst there was still a bit of back and forth with penalties on both sides, EG managed to keep possession for much of the second half. Ruby, who had a fantastic turn at fly half, was the first to get some points on the board, running it in after a number of phases by the forwards close to the line. A storming run by Vicki in midfield saw her link up with Comfort for her first try. Everyone put in a shift trying to tackle and run their way to the try line. And it was Comfort again who managed to touch the ball over in the corner for EG's third try. Guernsey were able to sneak one more past the team before the final whistle went. The team were also gifted with a return from Amy at second row, back from having her first baby, and a debut by Hailey, who showed her strength and might in the scrums.

Whilst the scoreline did not go in EGs favour, it does not take away from the brilliant performance they put in, against a team who finished second in the league last season. The scrums were strong, the connectivity of the team outstanding and they really showed their potential for the season.

Forward of the Match went to Emilia, who once again dominated in the tackles and was a pest for anyone trying to bring her down.
Back of the Match went to Comfort who made some fantastic runs down the wings and scored two tries.
And player of the Match went to Ruby who seemed to be everywhere in the game, as well as scoring a try, making brilliant tackles and runs from start to finish.
