Sunday saw a real game of two halves, with local rivals Crawley the opposition for the first home game of the league.
The game started with a lot of back and forth. Possession changed hands a number of times with EG coming close to a try, but the Crawley defence came on strong. The game started with some great runs from the backs but no try. The first try of the game went to Crawley, with a line break by their 15. G’s defence was strong and there were a couple of great moments, including a smashing tackle by Hobbit to push Crawley into touch and rewarded EG with a lineout. Both sides were aggressive and fought for the ball with possession changing hands. A high tackle resulted in a yellow card for EG. Down to 14 women, passionate and strong defence from G’s defied Crawley the opportunity to put more points on the board, and the first half ended without any further trys from either side.
EG started the second half with a spring in their step and speed on their wings. And it wasn't long before seasoned try scorer Steph worked her magic, with a try for EG which was converted by Sian.
The EG attacking lines started to come into play and the back line striked again with a fabulous try by Leah. With a taste for trys, good hands and real team play saw the ball go from Nina to Steph, who was brought down just short of the line. A quick pick and go resulted in another try by Ash.
Lots of action followed with attacking lines from Crawley struggling against an energetic G’s defence. Notable tackles from the forwards Kirsty, Vicky P, Bron and Nina, helped keep the oppo at bay. It wasn't long before possession was back in EG hands and quickly moving towards the try line. A team effort resulted in a held up try. Crawley kicked it back into EG hands and they stayed in that half for quite some time with more back and forth, before Nina’s strong running lines paid off and she got her try. A beautiful kick from Sian saw this converted. With only 10 minutes to go, it was clear that Crawley were struggling against the fresh legs of EG. And, finding herself in the backs for this game, Emilia capitalised on some great passing down the line to get the final try of the game for EG.
EG showed what they could do in the second half and came away with the win. We wish a speedy recovery to Becks, who made some fantastic line breaks in the game.
