The 2024/2025 league season kicked off on Sunday as the ladies travelled to Seaford for their first match against the Seaford Scarlets.
The game began with Vicki P driving the ball into contact. EG showed strength by winning an early scrum but lost possession, only to recover due to a Seaford penalty. Issy made a key tackle, followed by Hobbit’s rip, and Comfort advanced up the sideline, but Seaford’s defence held strong. EG won another scrum from a Seaford knock-on.
Seaford’s 15 scored the first try nine minutes in, leading 5-0 after a missed conversion. EG responded with Leah’s drive and Issy’s support, allowing Comfort to tie the game 5-5. Issy continued to dominate, but Seaford capitalized on a missed tackle, scoring again and converting for a 12-5 lead.
Before halftime, Hobbit regained possession at the try line, allowing Sian to clear the ball. EG’s defence remained solid, with tackles from Leah and strong wing support.
In the second half, EG’s tackling and pressure led to Seaford giving up penalties. After winning another scrum, Sian scored and converted, tying the game at 12-12. The match paused briefly when the referee got cramp and was helped by physio Molly.
Seaford pulled ahead with a try and conversion, 19-12, but EG fought back, equalizing with Comfort’s try and Sian’s conversion (19-19) in the final minutes. However, Seaford scored a final try and conversion, securing a 26-19 win.
Despite the tough loss, EG remains optimistic, preparing for a cup game against Seaford on September 29. Congratulations to Emilia Byrne (FOTM), Naomi Lewis (BOTM), and Sian Lewis (POTM), with special mention to Esther Quirin in her final game with the G’s.
