This Sunday saw G's take on Farnham 2's at home for their second leg after losing the first. With both teams capable of winning the league, this was set to be a fierce game of rugby and it certainly didn't disappoint!
With G's receiving the kick off, the first 5 minutes were a great showcase of their dynamic forward pack with Cox-Goodsell and Muggeridge teaming up for some strong carries. This was met by fierce jackling from the opposition, with a series of back and forth phases with both sides fighting strong for possession. With eyes on the open back field, Lewis (N) capitalised on the space with an excellent kick into the far back corner. With Shackel on the chase and quickly closing down on the defenders, the roar of the crowd begun to rise... who would get there first? With the ball meters from the line, Shackel got there and successfully scooped the ball to dot it over the line for the G's first try of the match! A tough angle for Lewis (S) left the try unconverted but nevertheless, G's had an early lead 10 minutes in.
The next 20 minutes of play demonstrated great strength in the G's defence as they kept the opposition out of their own half and managed to turn over some scrums with the strength of Pellett, Carrick and Sutton in the front row.
However, Farnham competed hard in the rucks, making O'donoghue's role at 9 particularly difficult, but she prevailed and managed to maintain possession. After 20 minutes of fruitless graft for both teams, the G's strong carries from Basterfield, Lewis (N) and Cox-Goodsell kept them up the field after a great break from Kraus in the back line. Carry after carry got G's so close to the line, could they get there? After a season of near misses, Carrick was determined to get her first ever try. With legs pumping through a mass of Farnham players, there was no stopping her power as she drove forward, extending her body over the line for her first ever try!
With Lewis (S) off injured, her wife stepped up to the mantel but had an unlucky near miss in converting the try leaving it 10-0 to G's just before half time. What would the second half bring?
Eager to extend their lead, G's started the second half strong with some excellent back line running from Wallis and Gayle. 15m out from the line, Farnham received a penalty and Lewis (N) was quick to react, darting through the cracked Farnham defense to score G's third try, putting them 15-0 ahead with no conversion.
This added fuel to Farnham's determination and from the kick off they were quick on the chase down with G's unfortunately knocking it into touch. Playing smart, Farnham took advantage of the scattered G's defense and took a quick line out 20m from their touch line. Fortunately, Gayle and Shackel were there to defend the quick attack to defy a try. A few strong attacking phases later from Farnham, they had a scrum 5m out from their try line and their scrum half took a quick ball blind to score in the corner of the pitch.
Unconverted, Farnham still had 10 points to make up on the scoreboard with 25 minutes to go. The reminder of the game was a spectacle of rugby from both sides with G's defending incredibly well with McCarthy, Teasdale and Addaway putting in some big tackles in the G's half. A noteable win for the G's was their successful defence of a powerful Farnham maul 15m out. Despite some big runs from Wallis, Kraus and Shackel, G's couldn’t quite get any more points on the board to extend their lead, leaving a very tense watch for the home crowd. Farnham continued to carry strong, slowly gaining meter by meter... would they close the gap?
With the G's energy levels depleting after many phases of big tackles, a blast of speed from Farnham’s back line managed to break through the G's line to get them another 5 points on the board leaving the score 15-10. Despite this, G's determination did not falter and they continued to work hard right through to the final whistle, earning themselves a fine win!
Big congratulations to the women on this pivotal win! With two games left, the league title is firmly in their sights and they will be back in action on the 26th of March away to Basingstoke.
