With the season coming to a close, the women headed down the coast for the second leg against Havant Sirens. With both teams in with the chance of winning the league, this match was set to be a great display of womens rugby; Could they make it 2/2 wins against Havant?
With possession from the kick off, Havant opted for creative game play for the first 15 minutes, experimenting with strong cross field kicks into the G's back field. Alas, this strategy was quickly retracted as G's countered the kicks well with Lewis (N) defending well at full back.
Utilising her excellent vision, Lewis (N) weaved through Havant's broken defense and was promptly supported by Sutton, Teasdale and Carrick. With a quick ball to chargers Greenslade and Sasserath, the G's were storming towards Havant's try line. Another quick pick and go from Muggeridge saw G's over the line, but sadly a strong Havant defence prevented the try by quickly getting underneath the ball.
Shortly after, G's again showcased their strength with Carrick winning back the ball in the first scrum of the game. Promptly followed by quick back-line hands and a storming run from Kraus, the G's scored their first try of the match with Lewis (S) successfully converting.
Determined to extend the lead, Shackel took the ball from the reset and quickly explored the dog leg in the Havant defense. Drawing players in, space appears for Kraus to break through again for another try less than two minutes from her first, again converted by Lewis (S)!
The next few minutes were a beautiful display of textbook rugby from Lewis (S), Greenslade, Shackel and Quirin. The ball travelling down the back line, with each player effectively drawing and passing each time, to allow Quirin the space to speed down the wing to take on the final opposition. A final expertly timed inside pass from Quirin allowed Shackel to step one last player and dot the ball over the line for their third converted try.
After a series of successful line outs from Pellet, Sutton and Greenslade, G's kept possession. Combined with powerful pod work from Meg, Sasserth and Muggeridge, the G's crept their way towards the try line with Shackel on the end to take the ball over for the 4th try of the match.
Despite the counter attack from Havant down the wing, G's regained possession with Gayle defending the wing and pushing Havant into touch. Eager for more, the forwards carried strong with Basterfield powering through the final meters, defying the masses of Havant defenders to score the 5th try of the match under the posts; an easy conversion for Lewis (S)
With Havant not entering the G's half for most of the first period, the ladies felt strong at half time with 5 tries and 4 conversions under their belt. What excitements would the second half hold?
Not wasting any time, after a couple of crash balls off the scrums, Kraus exploited the gaps in the Havant back line to score not one, not two, but another three tries, all in similar fashion.
Despite the strong possession from G's, a quick blind-side pick and go off a Havant scrum allowed them to break through towards the G's try line for their first try of the game which was successfully converted.
Determined to fight back, the Lewis duo and Greenslade relentlessly competed for the ball, successfully turning it over on at least 2 occasions. With O'donoghue quick to get the ball out to a speedy Shackel, these turnovers led to two more converted tries for the G's.
Trailing 7-68, Havant kept pushing and managed to make their way up the pitch towards the G's try line - would they close the gap? Despite their efforts, the G's managed to hold off Havant on the try line with big tackles and a superb clear out from Lewis (S).
However, Havant successfully retrieved the G's exit kick and ran it back up with great speed and footwork to earn themselves another converted try to finish the match 14-68.
Big congratulations to the women on their big win! With 3 games left, the chase is on for the top of the table!
