Remembrance Sunday saw the ladies head down to the coast to face Portsmouth Valkyrie's second team. After suffering a few injuries in their prior match, the ladies travelled light with a 16 woman squad.
The first 10 minutes saw strong attack from Portsmouths back line, leading them to two tries down the wing. Nevertheless, the EG ladies heads did not drop and they capitalised on their forward heavy squad, dominating the scrums resulting in a couple of turnovers. The ladies also pressed forwards with some smart tap and go's from the Lewis duo. Whilst the ladies momentum was building, they couldn't quite get the ball over the line to score in the first half. As fullback, Wallis was also very busy in the latter stages of the first half, amazingly holding up two tries from the opposition to eventually warn her player of the match. Despite her efforts, Portsmouth did manage to squeeze one more try in the first half.
Back fighting, EG ladies started the second half strong. Exploiting gaps and handling errors in the back field, Shackel kicked in to the space with her team mates running on to secure the ball. Followed by excellent support play and strength, Elsdon touches the ball down for the ladies first try of the match! Quickly after in the 65 minute, an excellent sprint by O'donohgue down the wing saw the ladies score their second try of the match!
With 10 minutes left to go at 17-10 and no subs the ladies dug deep to try and equal the score line. However once again Portsmouth draw strength down their wings and touched down for their final score of the match leaving the final score a respectable 22-10 in light of squad numbers. A great effort from all the ladies on Sunday. Congratulations to Player of the match - Ruby Wallis, forward of the match - Issy Carrick and Back of the match - Bronwyn O'donoghue. The ladies are back in action this Sunday at home to Havant- let's get behind them!
