This weekend, East Grinstead 2nd XV made the trip down to Hellingly in a bid to retain their unbeaten run in the league. It had been pre-agreed ahead of this fixture that it would be a double header in both the league and cup, so the boys were very motivated to not only extend their push for promotion, but also be in with a chance for a place in the Sussex Cup Final at the end of the season.

Harrison Berry was the first to open the scoring this week with two trys scored in quick succession, both scored in similar fashion allowing everyone’s favourite Mohawk to show off his quick feet and strength to get the ball over the line. Hellingly were a different outfit to when we played them last, a much more physical side who carried the ball well and seemed to be a lot better drilled. Moments after Harrison had scored his second of the day Hellingly responded with a converted try of their own.

Wanting to quickly respond - the discipline of our well trained squad shone through as East Grinstead responded before the end of the first half with two trys from Oliver Roberts and Max Crawley-Moore. Both of these scores highlighted the strength of our back-line this season with impeccable carrying and offloading across the park.

Half time – East Grinstead 22 – 7 Hellingly.

The second half started as the first half ended. It was the turn of the second youngest Roberts, and top try scorer for us this season, to score not long into the start of the second period. This try was quickly followed by yet another typical bounding run from Pete Morley.

The remainder of the day was certainly one for the backs to enjoy who, despite the ground tearing up, managed to dominate their opposite numbers. Chris Taylor scored a great try after a series of offloads from his backline friends before Oscar Read scored on his men’s debut in the corner. The day was rounded off by Hellingly scoring a conciliation with their centre scoring his second try of the game, which ended with scoreboard showing 14 - 48 - A great day at the office!

MOTM this weekend was selected by Hellingly who chose Rhys Skinner our Saffa 10 for his leadership and command of the backline, very very well-deserved mate. Hellingly also made a point of mentioning Harrison Berry’s fantastic double score and effort throughout the game.

DOTD went to Jack Andrews for picking up a yellow card – wash up duty for you on Thursday naughty boy.

A final shoutout from me this week to George Naylor for coming down to support the boys this weekend – it was great to have you back with the boys and involved in the song at the end of the game. Looking forward to having you back in the fold soon bud!

Next up is Newick at home in the league which will be the 2nd XV’s final home game of the season. A very important game for us which should be kicking off before the first XV’s game against Eastbourne, time TBC.
