Uckfield v G's

After a solid start to the season, with 4 wins out of 4, an impressive second team squad travelled to Uckfield this weekend looking to extend their undefeated run. This weekend we were delighted to welcome EGRFC colt skipper, Will Bramwell, as well as Oscar Staples, who both made their senior team debuts for the club.

This week I will refrain from going through each try as given the result of 80-0 I may still be writing this time next week! Full credit to Uckfield RFC who were as welcoming as always and despite the score all put their bodies on the line to give our 2nd XV a game this weekend. With a large squad, we were able to ensure the game went on after half time, by offering Uckfield 5 of our players over the course of the game when needed. My thanks once again to Archie, Tim, George Beet and Ollie for all putting on an Uckfield shirt. This showed fantastic sportsmanship and I know Uckfield were very grateful.

Colts Will and Oscar did themselves proud this weekend, both bringing energy to every tackle and carry they made, I hope both enjoyed playing for us as much as we enjoyed having them and look forward to their next outing. There were a number of standout scores this weekend, but I want to pick out two in particular which really were spectacular. The first was scored by returning scrummaging master Jambo. Not only did he bring fantastic leadership on the day (including teaching the skipper to not rotate the scrum) but he scored a fantastic try after selling a fantastic dummy on the Uckfield defence, cutting a fantastic line, and finishing in a mouthwatering fashion. The second, which was scored almost immediately after the above try at the restart, was scored by Pete Morley. Now I am sure not many members of the men’s squad would say Pete is known for his electric pace, but I don’t think I have ever seen anything like what I saw at the weekend. After leaping like a salmon to claim the ball off the restart, Pete, after realising there was an opening in front of him, turned on wheels you’d expect to see from someone half his age and probably on the wing. After a 50m+ carry Pete dove over the line in the 52nd minute leaving not only his teammates but a vast majority of the audience at Hempstead Playing fields in a state of shock.

MOTM this weekend was selected by Uckfield, and they chose to bestow the 2nd XV jacket on Will Roberts for a fantastic game in which he scored 4 tries…. he did however opt to cover himself in 3 out of the 4 pints instead of consuming which were given to him by club legend and 2nd XV manager Morgan Burger.

DOTD went to Will’s brother Ollie who celebrated his try by pointing to the stands (apparently there is a family tally of who can get the most points this season….we look forward to Noah returning and putting Ollie back in his place!).
