What a rugby weekend! Bath beat Exeter, England strolled through, EG 1s tore Hove apart, our ladies did the same to the Sussex Police, and the final piece to make the puzzle perfect was EG 2s against our friends from Cinque Ports. The only dampener was the weather! Winter arrived mid week, and persistent rain made it uncertain whether the game would go ahead. Pitch inspection passed, ref happy (Andy Poole, not so much, with the enforced change to pitch 1), and we were off!

With the team we had out, good weather would have given our excellent backs a field day, the rain and mud however, took this advantage away and made the game a lottery. Early exchanges were even, as we tried to play some rugby, while Ports kept it tight and used their big runners to batter our brave boys. A quick turnover saw some rare ball for the EG backs to play with, but a juggled ball at the crucial moment saw the Ports captain snatch the pill out of the air and sprint under the posts. The rest of the half was an ugly (and cold) arm wrestle where neither side could master the conditions to produce a meaningful thrust.

Some inspired substitutions at half time (Which included taking myself off), saw a brilliant start to the second period as the backs burst into action. Stair and Benny running hard and feeding Henry who burst down the left to the delight of the clamouring balcony. He was brought down just short, but Jon Seal was on hand to finish things off and score his first second team try! Ports restored their lead with a well struck penalty, but G’s used their secret weapon, S&C guru Oaks, who scored another close range try to take a lead that we wouldn’t relinquish. Cookie, who had kicked so well all game, slotted two penalties to stretch us clear and then Gibbo waded through the mud down the right to touch down to the delight of the G’s faithful. There was still time for Benny to receive the ball at pace from a delightful training park move and slice through like a knife through butter, to add a bit of gloss to what was a pretty unforgettable game.

DotD went to Henry who made a complete spectacle of himself while showing off to his adoring fans with a remarkable swan dive to score, at least a minute after the ref had blown his whistle! I could almost see his foot tapping with irritation!! MotM was again close. I thought Ali was brilliant at 12 with leadership and hard running, Crazy superb as normal, but this week Liam Casey takes it with a wonderful all round performance - Thank you brother!! Please see Lou’s link on Fb for some brilliant pics!

No games next week so we can enjoy the WC Final, but the week after will be a top of the table clash against Heathfield, as the two unbeaten teams in the league collide! Make sure you are available for this crucial clash!!
