Biography

Name: Richard Dodgson
Age: 28

Why do you play rugby?

I enjoy the comradery, and anyone can play attitude within Rugby plus the general physicality within the sport! I also really appreciate the overall respect between players and officials compared to other games such as football.

Life outside East Grinstead RFC

I am very sporty and active in general playing cricket in the summer, golf (now a fair-weather player), tennis and football occasionally. I enjoy a beer or two (who doesn't?) and love being on holiday!

Who’s your favourite player and why?

My favourite player to watch is Dan Carter. The skills and ability he brings to a rugby pitch is unbelievable.

What’s your favourite rugby moment?

My favourite rugby moment was the 2003 Rugby World Cup final - particularly the winning drop goal scored by Jonny Wilkinson. Cliché I know, but it's got to be one of England's greatest moments in the sport. Also, worth mentioning is England's performance to beat New Zealand in the 2019 Rugby World Cup Semi Final, which was an awesome all-round team performance.

Who will win the 2020 Six Nations?

Surely England have got to win the 2020 Six Nations - so much change within the other top teams.

What’s your advice to younger East Grinstead RFC players coming through?

When I was growing up, I was very on and off with rugby only to return and play properly when I was much older. I would strongly encourage younger players to keep playing as there aren't many better things than being part of a brilliant rugby club!

What is the Best Thing About East Grinstead RFC?

One of the best things about the club is the fact it's a central part of the town and creates a massive community feel. The amazing facilities also make it an incredible place to play and one of the best clubs around.

Editors note: Richard’s teammates hope that he will one day graduate into the forwards, where he can put his low centre of gravity to good use.
