Lewes v G's

Matt Marriott18 Feb - 14:56

22 - 39

East Grinstead 1st XV delivered a powerful away performance on a game that was definitely scrappy at times to secure a convincing 39–22 victory over Lewes, combining clinical finishing with total dominance at the set piece.

From the outset, Grinstead’s intent was clear. Their forward pack laid a formidable platform, particularly at scrum time, where they consistently marched Lewes backwards. That dominance soon translated into points when Jake Radcliffe crossed for the first of his two tries, finishing sharply after sustained pressure in the Lewes 22. Radcliffe doubled his tally a short time later, showing pace and composure to finish out wide.

The Grinstead scrum proved a decisive weapon throughout the afternoon. One particularly rampant shove saw number eight Aaron Boczek pick cleanly from the base and power over the line for a deserved try, underlining the visitors’ control up front. If the scrum was destructive, the lineout maul was equally ruthless. Boczek claimed his second of the afternoon, this time peeling off a well-organised driving maul to crash over. Sam Lindsay-McCall followed suit, finishing another unstoppable rolling effort as Lewes struggled to contain the coordinated surge of blue shirts.

Behind the pack, Noah Roberts orchestrated proceedings superbly. His tactical kicking repeatedly pinned Lewes deep in their own half, allowing East Grinstead to dictate territory. Roberts also added his own try to cap an influential display, spotting space and finishing confidently. Unfortunately, his afternoon was cut short when he limped off to join his injured brother Will on the sidelines — a bittersweet end to an outstanding contribution from the Roberts household.

Lewes rallied with periods of attacking threat and crossed for three tries of their own, but Grinstead’s composure and superiority at the set piece ensured they remained firmly in control whenever momentum shifted.

Man of the Match; Guy Collins — A stalwart presence throughout, Collins was heavily involved in all aspects of the set piece. His work rate and physicality, were central to East Grinstead’s dominance in the scrum and lineout.

DotD; Oscar Staples — Awarded (harshly, according to the author) in celebration of his trademark honesty and integrity — a nod taken in good spirits as the squad celebrated a strong away performance.

A comprehensive display on the road sees East Grinstead continue their strong campaign, with forward dominance and clinical finishing proving the difference on the day. We're ready to face the next battle in 2 weeks time for our top of the table clash with Pulborough. Onwards.
