G's v Lewes

G's v Lewes

Matt Marriott12 Nov - 13:35

43 - 14

On a perfect rugby Saturday, we welcomed Lewes to what was to be an extremely busy Saturday afternoon. A Sunshine 7’s lunch, a packed club house and some great rugby to be watched.

In a league the boys are expected to just turn up and do the job, the game started against the grain with Lewes snaffling a great intercept, while under stern pressure in their own 22, and dotting down under the G’s sticks! Maybe it was the kick up the **** the team needed to realise we aren’t unbeatable.

Miss passes, 1 up runners, great mauls and even better scrums, meant the game soon found its flow. Sam and Brimo having worked very well with the forwards this season, got to be involved in a great forward try with a driving maul getting Connor over the whitewash (have I mentioned that Connor turned up complaining about being poorly and having his missus make him breakfast in the morning he felt so unwell? I’m pretty sure it was for sympathy none of which he got).

More miss passes, this time going to ground, 1 up runners and knock on’s, soon saw Connor take advantage of the mayhem and plunge over the whitewash again from a great driving maul - that’s 2 for the sick number 8 now.

However the real man of the match soon arrived on the scene, James Funnell. This was his first outing this season for the blue hoops and what a game to return for, instantly bringing what the team needed in a very frustrating first half. He also crossed the whitewash off the back of some very nice forward play where he soon found a gap through the Lewes defence to dot it down.

The second half was very much like the first, miss passes, knock ons, wild offloads, 1 up runners, breakdowns not supported but regardless of all that, a further 4 trys were scored by DoR Dan Poulton, the boy back from university, and a few more for Connor who I believe ended up with 4 meat pies in a day he turned up “ill”.

All in all a good day for the club both on and off the pitch, with work ons from both, will they be done? Who knows! This weekend will surely tell us if we are ready for what is an expected promotion season.
