The Road to Twickers
With only three games before a hopeful return for EGRFC to the home of rugby, the boys turned up knowing a lot of hard rugby was going to need to be played to get there.
With a few usual faces missing and an old face returning in Luke Maker, the warm up was done the speeches given and all that was left to do was the job. From the whistle the boys flew out the gates with two very quick trys getting them off the mark, and the tails were high. Basildon then returned fire from some sloppy work under the high ball which resulted in a score for them.
The game eventually found its rhythm, Grinstead having to do a large amount of defensive work and Basildon being repelled time and again. Ali then got yellow carded for clotheslining a player, Aaron soon followed for asking something, a Basildon player then got yellow carded for asking for something else, Dave Bridges then got yellow carded for forgetting he wasn’t in the octagon anymore, then another Basildon player got yellow carded for something ridiculous - 5 yellows and no punches was something to behold!!!
It would however be Luke ‘the dream’ Maker on a storming return, who electrified the pitch for the full 80, scoring two trys which would secure the inevitable win for the Gs. He made some great tackles and mesmerising runs in attack, he was here, there and everywhere we needed him to be. Setting up a great try For Or Shay - Chasing up on a bobbling ball in the Basildon back field and hacking the egg 30 meters down field, he slowed himself down, gained his composure, drew the final defender to release the big back row for what was a superb try.
All in all a good game, which keeps the dream alive and the boys with a taste of the finals. Next round in May!
