In preparation for the upcoming season and the first game in Counties 1 Surrey/Sussex, East Grinstead faced Heathfield in a pre-season friendly. Heathfield are an established side within the Counties 1 Kent league, having finished 4th last season.

After a downpour of rain during the week to soften the pitches, the skies cleared and the temperature rose to make for splendid conditions for running rugby at East Grinstead Headquarters.

The first half of the game was marked by relentless defensive efforts from both teams; displaying impressive discipline and resilience, denying their opponents any clear scoring opportunities. The spectators were treated to intense scrummages, powerful tackles, and exceptional lineout play.

Heathfield were the first to break the deadlock with their heavy pack playing a big part to push East Grinstead back, keep the momentum going and bulldoze their way over the line. Their try scorer, returning to the field after some time away, was also their man of the match. Conversion missed.

G’s quickly bounced back with quick passing and structured play to find space in the broken Heathfield defence to create a 2-on-1 with the fullback, with the final pass being intentionally knocked on. Yellow card for Heathfield, but no penalty-try.

The next 10, Heathfield showed their defensive worth as, despite being a man down, held firm to keep East Grinstead from scoring.

East Grinstead 0 – 5 Heathfield as the whistle went for the half.

As the second half commenced, the tension on the field continued to build. Both East Grinstead RFC and Heathfield RFC were determined to gain the upper hand and build a score.

There were a huge amount of positive passages of play including well-executed phases and clever offloads, but ultimately ended with unforced errors or a penalty.

Despite the deficit, East Grinstead RFC rallied and launched a series of fierce attacks in a bid to level the score. Their efforts were commendable, but the resolute defence of Heathfield RFC held firm.

With 10 left on the clock Heathfield won a penalty in front of the posts and decided to kick for goal, which was ultimately missed. Leaving the score 0-5.

The remaining minutes of the match were marked by intense back-and-forth play, with both teams pushing themselves to the limit. However, Heathfield RFC's lead remained intact until the final whistle.

Final score: East Grinstead 0 – 5 Heathfield

On a hot, dry, sunny day I don’t think anyone would’ve predicted such a low scoring game. Heathfield RFC's ability to secure the lone try of the match ultimately proved decisive in their victory. East Grinstead RFC showcased their defensive prowess, but they were unable to break through their opponents' well-organized defence.

Both teams demonstrated their commitment to the sport and exhibited tremendous sportsmanship throughout the game.

Plenty to work on before the G’s first league game at home, where we face Twickenham on September 16th.

Onwards.
