Biography

Name: Claire ‘Gags’ Sutton

Why do you play rugby?

I got into rugby a bit late really. My Nana has been a huge rugby fan for as long as I can remember and I challenge anyone to know as much as she does. She took me to the Big Game a couple of years ago and I fell in love with Twickenham and rugby. Then a friend of mine told me she had started playing rugby. Having tried many ways to keep fit, and none succeeding, I decided to give rugby a go as well.

I turned up to EGRFC on my own and immediately felt welcome. I have been playing rugby for just over 18 months as a prop and could not imagine doing anything else.

Who’s your favourite player and why?
This is a tough one. In women’s rugby I admire the likes of Poppy Cleall and Hannah Botterman for their power. In men’s rugby, probably Joe Marler and Marcus Smith. When I went to watch the Big Game a couple of years ago, Smith was new to the Quins team and he has gone from strength to strength.

What’s your favourite rugby moment?
Stepping out for the first time as a team at the development tournament last year was pretty awesome and then again at the Sunshine Sevens (even though I was a bag of nerves).

What’s your advice to new East Grinstead RFC players?
Just give it a go and take any opportunity that comes your way. Playing a game of rugby with a good team at your side is what it is all about. The confidence you gain from it is something I have never experienced and I am lucky to have met some amazing people in the last two years. I just wish I had tried rugby sooner. SO, don’t hesitate. Just give it a try. Oh and get used to wearing a mouth guard too!

What is the Best Thing About East Grinstead RFC?
Everything. The people, the pitches, the clubhouse, the kit, the mud, the beer! Everyone makes you feel so welcome and like you belong there.
