In an electrifying clash on the rugby pitch, East Grinstead RFC embarked on an international journey, flying to Jersey to take on the formidable Jersey Reds this weekend. With East Grinstead being the only team to have beaten the table-toppers this season, anticipation was high for a riveting display of rugby from both sides.

Despite the early 4am start, EGRFC burst onto the field, showcasing exceptional carries from the likes of Gould, Pellett, and Byrne in the forward pack. Their relentless forward momentum, combined with the strategic running lines of Webber and Wallis (C), saw EG inch closer to the try line. A powerful drive from Gould saw the G’s crash over for the first points of the match, duly converted by Lewis (S), putting EG ahead 7-0.

However, Jersey Reds swiftly retaliated, asserting dominance in the scrums and unleashing their speed on the wing to narrow the gap to 5-7, just 15 minutes into the game. With impeccable hands and swift manoeuvres, Jersey added two more tries to their tally, extending their lead to 17-7.

Undeterred, East Grinstead rallied back with Sullivan and May Miller orchestrating impressive moves in the centres, earning EG their second try courtesy of a blistering run from Wallis (R). The conversion brought EG within touching distance at 17-14 as halftime beckoned.

The second half witnessed Jersey Reds maintaining their stronghold, particularly in the scrums, against a tiring East Grinstead side. Despite valiant defensive efforts from Lewis (S) and tracking from May Miller, Jersey extended their lead to 24-14.

However, Jersey's momentum was momentarily halted as they received a yellow card, offering East Grinstead a window of opportunity. EG capitalised on this advantage, surging up the field with powerful carries from Hulst, Clark, and Forsyth, culminating in Carrick smashing her way over the line for a crucial try. The conversion narrowed the scoreline to 24-21 with 20 minutes left on the clock.

The game hung in the balance as EG fought tooth and nail, injecting fresh legs into the fray with O'Donoghue and Shackel. Despite their resilience, Jersey's superior fitness ultimately prevailed, as they notched up two more tries, extending their lead to 34-21 with just 10 minutes remaining.

In a testament to their sportsmanship and determination, EG opted to play out the final minutes after the referee suffered an injury. However, despite their efforts, Jersey managed to slot in one final converted try, sealing a hard-fought victory at 41-21.

Although the scoreboard didn't favour EG, spectators and even the president of Jersey Rugby Club hailed their performance as one of the best displays against Jersey in recent memory. With their heads held high, EG looks forward to their upcoming home rematch against Seaford this Sunday, urging fans to come out in full force and cheer them on to victory.
