On a cold but sunny afternoon, both teams played some superb rugby and provided the watching crowd with a thoroughly entertaining game. EG had the better of the opening exchanges, dominating possession and territory, but Heathfield defended resolutely. A well worked move from a scrum saw Matt Tomkinson coast through to score. The conversion hit the post.
EG played some of our best rugby of the season and created a number of chances to score, but sadly, could not finish them off as frustrating handling errors crept in.Heathfield then had a period of pressure and when a yellow card reduced EG to 14, Heathfield exploited the man advantage and scored a converted try to lead 7-5 at half-time.
Heathfield started the second half stronger and EG dropped off some tackles allowing them to score a try. This time it was Heathfield's turn to hit the post with the conversion. 12-5.
With time running out EG kicked long and pressured sufficiently to earn a penalty. The quick thinking Harry Bryant tapped and went & ghosted through under the posts. Ollie Adams' conversion levelled the scores. The final minutes saw Heathfield battering at the EG line and only a monumental defensive effort kept them out.
A draw was probably the fairest result of a cracking game for which all involved deserve much credit.
The u16's that stepped up were invaluable and played superbly. Or Shay & Olly Jones were immense in the back row and the whole team can be proud of the progress they have made against a side that beat them comfortably in a friendly earlier in the season.
Still unbeaten in the league!
