EG Colts vs Crawley Colts
A close call
The opening encounter of the season turned out to be a thriller!
EG had the better of the opening exchanges and were on the front foot after a barnstorming run from Liam Foulds. The ball was moved wide and Ben Beard's mazy run eluded the Crawley defence and he scored in the corner.
Crawley came back into the game and enjoyed a sustained period of possession, but EG won a kickable penalty that Ollie Adams duly slotted to take the score to 8-0.
Crawley continued to press and caused EG problems at the line-out in particular. Eventually our defence cracked and Crawley scored a try. The missed conversion was to prove costly.
The second half was a very even contest with both sides squandering scoring opportunities. Late in the game, EG were caught napping on a penalty and conceded a soft try. No conversion. 8-10 the score. The nature of the try seemed to galvanise the team back into action and they put some excellent phases together, got down the field and were awarded a penalty. Jake Radcliffe stepped up and calmly slotted the kick. The final whistle blew and victory was clinched!
Both sides deserve much credit for a thoroughly enjoyable game.
Ollie Roberts is worthy of special mention for a phenomenal defensive display that sets the standard for the rest of the team.
