RUGBY FESTIVAL FUN FOR OVER 200 LOCAL PRIMARY CHILDREN

Last Friday (29 March 2019), East Grinstead Rugby Football Club (EGRFC) hosted a fun Primary School TAG Rugby festival for over 200 local primary children.

The sun shone, we were lucky, as boys and girls from Year 3 and 4 and girls from Year 5 and Year 6 took to the pitches to enjoy an afternoon of tag rugby, many for their first time. The main objective of TAG rugby is to have fun and enjoy learning to play rugby whilst experiencing the responsibility of being a member of a team.

Steve Hill, EG School Sports Coordinator said: “It was great to see nine of our local East Grinstead Primary Schools supporting our new event at the East Grinstead Rugby Club. With over 160 seven and eight year olds (boys and girls) and 40 nine and ten year old girls playing and learning the skills of TAG Rugby it was a wonderful addition to the Blue Cube Security Sunshine Sevens programme, which will see the schools compete against each other on Friday 26th April. A massive thanks to David Hooker and his brilliant coaches for volunteering their time to coach the children and to those students from Imberhorne School that helped on the day.”

Stephen Floodgate, EGRFC U7’s Junior Coach, who coordinated activities on the day said: “It was a fantastic turn out and all teams played well together, with great enthusiasm, commitment, determination and a high level of sportsmanship. We were very proud of their efforts but more importantly, loved seeing them enjoy the wonderful game of rugby!

Primary Schools: Estcots, St Peters, Halsford Park, Turners Hill, Meads, St Mary’s, Ashurst Wood, Crawley Down and Blackwell.

Tag rugby - each player has two velcro tags attached to a waistband and when these as caught by opposing players it counts as a tackle. At these age groups, coaches are looking to develop agility, basic handling and awareness of space.

EGRFC is a thriving community rugby club with an ever growing junior & intermediate sections – Girls and Boys (U6-U11) and Girls (U11-U18). Intermediates (U12-U16), Colts (U17-U18). Junior training takes place every Sunday (September–April) from 10.00am to 12.00pm at East Grinstead Rugby Football Club, Saint Hill Road. During the summer months – fun rugby sessions and camps are arranged.
