… Just the Beginning!

On a muddy, cold, wet Saturday afternoon (16 March 2019), East Grinstead Rugby Football Club (EGRFC) hosted it’s first EGRFC Ladies Development 7’s Rugby Tournament, for teams based in the Sussex area.

Consisting of 6 Sussex teams – EGRFC Ladies, Sussex Uni Stormers, Sussex Uni Tsunami, Lewes (Louis XL), Burgess Hill and Sussex Police, for many players, this was the first time that they had taken part in a contact environment.

Susannah Funnell, Chair and Manager of EGRFC Ladies Team said “The day was absolutely awesome, I haven’t felt that adrenaline for a long while. I’m proud to say I’m part of the EGRFC ladies. Fantastic effort from all the players, coaches and of course our home supporters who turned out for the games. We are so proud and think we have shown how we are progressing as a side. A big thank you also to our sponsors - watch out for the new kit next month!”

Andy Poole, EGRFC President and Referee for the day, said: “Last Saturday was one of the most enjoyable days I have ever had at EGRFC. In support of our own burgeoning ladies’ team, this fixture was to allow those ladies coming into rugby to enjoy contact rugby (some for the first time) in the very entertaining format of 7’s. The day was a huge success with some excellent rugby played by all and a great advertisement for Ladies Sussex Rugby”.

The EGRFC Ladies will be taking part in this year’s Blue Cube Security Sunshine Sevens Tournament on Sunday 28 April 2019, an event that has established itself as the longest running Charity Sevens Tournament in England and manages to attract the top sides in the South of England to come and play and help raise money for local children’s charities – 62nd Year!

EGRFC Ladies Rugby Training takes place every Tuesday night from 7.00pm-8.30pm and Sunday afternoon, 1.00pm-3.00pm at East Grinstead Rugby Football Club, Saint Hill Road and is aimed at ladies of all abilities, fitness levels and experience. Rugby is one of the fastest growing team sports for women in England. Please contact Susannah Funnell by emailing ladies@egrfc.com if you would like to get involved.
