Welcome to the Blue Cube Security 60th Sunshine Sevens
The East Grinstead Sunshine Sevens will, this year, celebrate its 60th anniversary. Established in 1957 it was initiated to raise desperately needed funds for the local Sunshine Home for blind and deaf children, taking its name from the cause which it went on to support for many years. The event has always embraced the positive and unselfish principles that have long been associated with the rugby community. All proceeds from the weekend are donated to carefully selected local charities.
The inaugural competition included eight teams who came together to battle for the Lady Irene Astor of Hever Rose Bowl, donated and presented by Lady Irene herself. The participants still compete for the same trophy today. The Westminster Bank were the victors of that first tournament and they went on to win the next two years. The Sunshine Sevens soon grew in popularity and started to attract the best sides in the south and winners included; Harlequins, Rosslyn Park, London Welsh, London Scottish, Blackheath, Steatham and Croydon as well as other local clubs like Maidstone, Walingham and Old Brightonians. Despite entering sides in all 59 competitions, the hosts have never managed to lift the trophy…
As the Sevens format started to establish itself as an independent sport alongside the fifteen man game, the specialist touring sides started to dominate the event and the main competition has now become a show piece for these elite sides, who go on to compete in all the major sevens tournaments. Recent winners include; Samurai, Marauders, Wooden Spoon, Esher and Apache the current holders.
We believe that The Sunshine Sevens is now the longest, continuous Sevens tournament in England – and that’s worth celebrating....
