Where & When
The Under 11s "squad" meets every Sunday during the season as follows:
-
at the East Grinstead Rugby Club at 10:00 - 12:00 for training
-
if there is a home game scheduled, at the same place and time, (which usually incorporates some training with the opposing side); or
-
if there is an away game scheduled according to details that Greg Caldwell sends out by email or SMS during the week.
There is usually a whiteboard in front of the entrance to
East Grinstead club house showing where on the pitches we
have been allocated for training / game.
The season usually start from the first weekend in
September with a break at Christmas and Easter, finishing
appoximately the third weekend in April.
Who
Jay Skipworth is the U11s coach for 2007/8 season.
Although a number of Dads join in to help with the
coaching Jay can be identified as the Kiwi guy blowing a
whistle or carrying a huge kit bag, stirrup pump, water
bottle basket, tackle guards and a bag containing 20 rugby
balls!
Please contact Greg Caldwell (as above) if you want to be
included on the regular email reminder of fixtures and
arrangements.
The Game
At Under 11s we are officially at Midi level in the RFU
Continuum. The game is quite close to full rugby union
rules with 12 players on each side, full contact, various
types of kicks allowed, lineouts and scrummages (pack of 5
players).
The RFU also has guide lines for parental involvement
within the
RFU Rugby Continuum.
Please take the time to
read the guidelines.
New Starters
We welcome new starters and are accustomed to gently
building up skills and experience to take part in games as
soon as possible. The priority here is on safety, closely
followed by fun and involvement. Ultimately the players
want to win games and we work towards making that as
regular and happy occurrence as we can manage.
Kit
Players need to bring shorts, socks, boots and mouth
guard. The club provides an East Grinstead shirt for
matches and these or your own can be used for training.
Any new-comers should bring their own shirt for training
in the first weeks since there is sometimes a delay on
getting the club ones. Personally I recommend paying a
little extra for the mouth guard e.g. the one up from the
budget price Shock Doctor one because they're easier to
mould and more comfortable to wear.
For the early and late parts of the season when the ground
is hard we suggest players wear moulded sole boots
intended for firm ground (e.g. football boots with moulded
soles). When it gets wetter longer studded boots are
usually better, especially at East Ginstead where the clay
tends to hold the water.
When it gets very cold we recommend that players wear
tracksuit bottoms for training. Many players wear some
sort of body protection under their main shirt, whether
that's proper body armour or just a few extra shirts.
The clubhouse has good changing and showering facilities
although most of the young folk seem to turn up in kit and
leave in the same kit covered in mud. Your choice.
