Good Performance by Home Team - Not reflected in Score

Eastbourne at East Grinstead

Sunday 4th November 2007

Eastbourne came to East Grinstead alone since Lewes had pulled out of a three-way mini tournament. In this game we allowed conversion kicking after each try for the first time, which added a little drama and emotional connection to the game we all watch on the television.

East Grinstead came out storming in the first half with an impressive display of rucking by the forwards, setting up good ball for the backs to probe the Eastbourne defence. For twenty minutes East Grinstead had nearly all of the possession and came close to scoring on at least three occasions but despite this Eastbourne held on and kept the scoreline to nil for both sides at the break.

In the second half the frustration showed and the game became a much more even affair. East Grinstead rucking lapsed into driving mauls which unfortunately usually resulted in loss of possession and the visitors had the chance to demonstrate some good running and scored first and converted for 7 points. Tommy Pool, playing at fly half, scored with an adventurous individual try from an East Grinstead lineout but Jason Dack was unable to convert. Eastbourne went on to score and convert another and the game finished with a scoreline which did not seem to do justice to a good performance by the home team.

East Grinstead 5 points, Eastbourne 14 points.
