Saturday 28th April 2007

Ladies Tournament

Girls, Under 14, Under 17 Events

Boys Under 16 Event

Junior Section Presenations

Evening Party in the Marquee

Sunshine 7s Day 2 was another success beginning Girls, Under 14, Under 17 Events.

The U16 Boys tournament was a very close run affair between East Grinstead - Sussex - Haywards Heath - Eastbourne. This was eventually won by Haywards Heath who played some superb rugby during the course of the afternoon. We would also like to wish the Sussex team every success in their forth coming Tour of Australia.

Ten Ladies Teams then competed for the Steve Cairns Ladies Trophy. The semi finals saw The Pink Ba-Ba's beat Brighton University 2 50-0 whilst Old Caterhamians just manged to get through to the final with a close 21-19 win over Romford Ravens 1.

There is no doubt, from watching them, that the Pink Ba-ba's are a very strong side and their convincing win of 59-0 over Old Caterhamians provided a demonstration of entertaining Ladies Rugby to a very high standard .

Those who did not make it through the first round had the plate contest to look forward to. Kilburn Cosmos and Brighton University met in the Semi-Finals with Kilburn Cosmos winning a convincing 36-0. This was followed by Worthing coming out ahead in the second Semi Final with a 12-0 win over East Grinstead 2.

Sunshine 7s

The final was a well fought game with Kilburn Cosmos beating Worthing 14-5 and receiving the Plate Trophy

It just remains to add a comment about "Joy and Pain" from one of the stalwart referees of the day Bill Blackledge. Bill had to referee both the Ladies Cup Semi-Final & Final as there was a serious shortage of referees! The joy was two bottles of bubbly from EGRFC, the pain came at a dinner Bill attended on Saturday evening when at 10.00pm with severe cramp in the left leg Bill apparently leapt up from his seat in front of 30 people shouting Ah, Ah, Ah! As one can imagine this caused something of a stir, hopefully Bill was able to explain the reason for his pain between Ah's.

This was followed by presentations for the Junior Sections and a Party in the Marquee in the evening, which was enjoyed by all.

The evening saw the formation of a new Sevens Side not mentioned in the original profiles. The Fat Boys. Such teams are only formed when the tournament organiser waits until gone 11pm on the party night before mentioning that a team has dropped out. Of course lots of volunteers, whose judgement may have been impared, were seen to step forward with Mitch Knight at the head. Mitch was still try to collect volunteers on the Sunday morning. Desperation even led him to ask the Webmaster who fortunately is old enough to know better and declined (luckily he also had no kit with him)! But Mitch did manage to persuade Tony Makolski who was seen limping towards the massage tent after the first run out! Luckily they did not meet the British Army otherwise I think the girls in the massage tent would have definately had their work cut out for them.

For those who couldn't make it you can get some idea of the fun that was had by viewing the following photographs, which were kindly taken by John O'Brien of First Focus Photo. If you are interested in quality copies or to see lots more shots taken on the day please visit their website http://www.firstfocusphoto.com

And of course the President and Chairman of EGRFC were there but still not the ones running around!!
